Firefighters work to extinguish the fire after a driver died in a head-on collision while being chased by State Troopers early Saturday morning. The driver fled a DUI checkpoint in the vicinity of N. Adams St. at Joyland about 2.30 am. Troopers chased the driver eastbound on NC 98 at speeds in excess of 100 mph until the suspect car ran head-on into a furniture truck near Southview Rd. The driver of the truck and a companion were injured but not critically. At least one of the troopers also crashed at the scene when his cruiser struck and snapped a power pole. NC 98 was closed for hours.
